ISLAND RALLY A GO - AUGUST 27 TO 29

Contrary to any rumours going around out there the Island Rally, hosted by the PEI Motorcycle Touring Club will be going again this year August 27th to 29th. It will be a great weekend - as is usual for this well established event. The folks at the PEIMTC will be working with the new rally in Charlottetown to ensure a great weekend for Islanders and visitors alike. More details will be coming in late April. GOLD WING RALLY COMING IN JULY

Its started!! Folks are working on great events that will bring visitors to our Island, and provide us with lots of meet and greet, as well as riding opportunities.

This year the Gold Wing Road Riders Association will be bringing their regional rally to Prince Edward Island. It is an annual affair held in a different Maritime province every year. This year it is our turn. The Maritimes are a region of the GWRRA which is based in Phoenix, Arizona. Our region is called Region "L".There are regions all through Canada, USA, and even in Japan and Europe along with other countries.52 countries in all. Our rally will be held July 29 thru to August 1st in Summerside at the Causewaybay Linkletter Hotel. You can find information by going to the GWRRA website gwrra.org.

SURE SIGNS OF SPRING

If you are slogging through another long, dreary winter ... and going through bike withdrawal, too,
Fear not! Sure signs of Spring were in evidence here on PEI on this past week.

Whilst running around Charlottetown, doing many errands, what do I hear but that unmistakable "poTAtoe, poTAtoe, poTAtoe" and YES, it was! An intrepid biker, on his Harley, cruising down the street, enjoying the gorgeous weather we were having.

The VERY next day -- in the middle of a HUGE snowstorm, in fact (one of the biggest we've had so far this winter), I look out my home-office window and what do I see?!? A robin. A freakin' *crazy* ROBIN!!! And he was back again the NEXT day. Can Spring be far behind???

Only on PEI do you have Spring and Winter, all mixed up together, and the signs of both in your face.

Red Island Run to join Island Calendar of Events

Great to learn that there will be a new event happening on the Island in August of 2010 when the inaugural Red Island Run Motorcycle Rally takes place August 27-29. What is really nice is to see that they plan a trade show and vendor village, demo rides and a parade - all aspects of rallyies that I enjoy. For more about the new rally go to www.redislandrun.com

Power Lifters coming to Town

Power lifting champ Tom Nichols, a biker himself and well known as host of the PEI Touring Clubs Annual Rally at Vacationland was quoted in the daily newspaper as saying 2011 will be an exciting time in PEI. The P.E.I. Powerlifting Association will be hosting the 2011 nationals in PEI, bringing more than 300 lifters from across Canada.

Tom said it will be an exciting time and an awesome display of the nation’s representatives in an incredible sport.

He was at the provincial powerlifting invitational and bench press competition in Charlottetown. Wrestler “Kowboy” Mike Hughes was also on hand promoting his Red Rock Wrestling show on PEI April 30th. You will remember Mike was at last years PEI Motorcycle Show.

Sharing the Enthusiasm

OK, so it’s a new decade. To most of us it is just another January and at least 4 months before we will be hitting the highways for a good ride. A few brave souls may head out on fine days, but they are the very hardy!

It’s a frustrating time of year for everyone who enjoys the open road. There are a few ways to keep the enthusiasm alive. One could head south, or to the west coats of course, but a less expensive and time consuming option may be to head on out to a bike show. We don’t have the date for the PEI show yet, but have heard that the Atlantic Motorcycle and RV show will be held in New Brunswick Feb 12-14.

If you want to hop a train, plane or automobile to Toronto there are two big events in the works at the International Centre. The North American International Motorcycle Supershow January 15-17 and the Toronto International Spring Motorcycle Show Apr 10-11.

Personally I love going to shows. It’s a chance to check out what’s new, talk with like minded folks and even take in some seminars or travel destination info sessions.

looking back and dreamin' forward

Its been quite a year for the motorcyclepei team. Biker Deb has been contending with an unexpected turn to life as a single, new job, car accident and much more. Its taken her out of action for much of the year.

Gimpy Chick went on the road for four months, traveling coast to coast with my olde Q-Tip in our mini-RV. We purchased the Rialta when diabetes weakened his legs. Were determined to do the trip one way or another. Must admit we would look with longing at the hundreds of bikers who passed us on the highways.

Didn’t take us long to decide that a perfect traveling lifestyle would entail a bigger RV, with a bike on the back. Being able to park our “home” in a nice campground and do day trips on the bike would be a dream come true!

All we need now is a big lottery win! Hmmmm, methinks I should start buying tickets!

DECEMBER WISHES

With snow finally covering the roads we all have to admit that winter is making riding darn near impossible. I say darn near because we all know a dedicated few who make a point of riding every month of the year. Certainly a number of folks were spotted on the roads in December! Good on you guys.

Personally I think trailering the bike to warmer climates would be a great move! Especially in February or March when winter is getting really old.

Whether you keep the spirit alive by actually riding somewhere, by spit and polishing your bike, or by finding accessories or biker duds under the tree we here at MotorcyclePEI do wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2010. May you truly enjoy a healthy, happy holiday season.

AMY GALLANT MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RUN

If you're "out and about" on July 12th, (Rain date, July 19) and looking for a run to do, try dropping in and joining the Amy Gallant Memorial Motorcycle Run, sponsored by the East Prine chapter of MADD.

Registration is at 12 noon. Ride leaves at 1 pm. Cost is $10 per driver; $5 per passenger. Ride starts at teh Bloomfield Park. There will be a BBQ at 4 pm; and prizes will be awarded. Donations will be accepted, as well. For more information, contact Joey or Debbie at 859-3775.

What a great way to enjoy the roads and scenery, and help out in a good cause, as well!

Ride to Work Day

June 15th is the official 18th annual International Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day, an event that comes with a few perks. A free individual MCC (Motorcycle Confederation of Canada) Bronze Membership will provided to all respondents who send a picture of themselves with their motorcycle/scooter on Ride to Work Day.

KOWBOY MIKE HUGHES RIDES INTO 2ND ANNUAL PEI MOTORCYCLE SHOW

While at the PEI Motorcycle show was thrilled to meet Kowboy Mike Hughes, who was signing autographs at the Red Rock Harley-Davidson booth.

Kowboy was meeting and greeting fans, young and old, old and new (like me!) and graciously giving photo ops to any who asked. He's in town promoting the premiere of his new reality wrestling show, "Kardinal Sinners" which follows the lives of Hughes and three other Maritime wrestlers.
It debuted on Rush-TV on April 27 at 9:30 p.m.

For those of you who don't know, Mike is Island born and bred ... and his proud Mom, Mary, was there at the premiere, graciously accepting congratulations, as well. Nice to meet you, Mary. If the first show was any indication, Mike can add the title of "Television star" to his credentials. He has camera presence, as well as stage presence ... and is an extremely nice guy, to boot!

NEW MANAGER AT DBL DREAM MACHINES (HONDA)

Spent a few minutes talking with Mike Roberts at the PEI Motorcycle show recently. Mike is the new General Manager at DBL Dream Machines (Honda dealer) in Summerside.

Mike brings to the job his experience from working at both Glenn's and ToyMaster ... as well as fresh ideas, no doubt.

Most exciting news is, they're "working on" opening a new store in Charlottetown by the Spring of 2010.
"It will be a full-line Honda dealership" says Roberts.

Yah, hurray! No more running to S'side for parts for the Nighthawk!

The CAV

South Africa Unit (2nd CAV)

Under the name of Canadian Army Veterans The CAV; are a brotherhood of serving and veteran motorcycle enthusiasts who have volunteered to serve our Country; whether it be in Regiments, on Ships or with Air Squadrons or Bases across Canada and Overseas. CAV units formed across Canada are named in tribute of Canadian Battle Honours, to continue the traditions and bonds formed in war and peace.

The CAV was formed by Canadian Veterans whose common bond was service to one s country and the fact they were avid motorcyclists. To date we have members who have served our country in every theatre of military operations, in peace or at war; as members of NATO, the United Nations or members of Canada s present Army, Navy or Air Force.

Our Mission is to provide our members with a Unit to continue service to each other and our Communities and Country. We are a Brotherhood of Canadian Army Veterans, mounted on motorcycles of all different types. The CAV promotes safe, responsible motorcycling.

Alongside our Veteran Supporter members, (Veteran Supporters are our family; brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, partners, friends and comrades that share a love of country, community and motorcycles) we continue to volunteer our time for our Country by actively supporting each other, our brothers in arms and our communities through charity rides and events.

The CAV is now represented on PEI by The South Africa Unit.

MOTORCYCLE TOURING IN PEI - BOOK TO BE RELEASE AT BIK SHOW

The Island’s first travel guide devoted to touring the province by motorcycle will be released this Saturday at Motorcycle Show 2009 to be held at the Charlottetown Civic Centre April 18-19. Motorcycle Touring in Prince Edward Island.....Your Guide to Tip to Tip Adventure, is written and designed by yours truly, Julie V. Watson, with contributions of both editorial and photography by John C. Watson and Debbie Gamble-Arsenault.

We are trying something new with this guidebook. It will be offered for sale through a web storefront as either a printed book or as a downloadable PDF file. The book which was written, designed and taken to the ready-to-print stage right here in PEI will be marketed, both at home and internationally through electronic media.

We love the fact that people can download it into their own computer. They can read and enjoy it, then print the pages they want. If they want a copy to travel with they can print it in black and white or full colour. Of course they don’t get the glossy covers and coil bound book, but it’s a great inexpensive option.

Motorcycle Touring in Prince Edward Island is a true Island project featuring photography by John Watson, who got his first training at Holland College.

Motorcycle enthusiasts featured in the book include Liam and Kim Dolan of Olde Dublin Pub and Claddagh Oyster House, and Tom Nichols of Vacationland. Several tours include lighthouses, the Hillsborough River and the three regions of the province.

BIKES COMING OUT OF THE WOODWORK

Hola, friends!

Have you been able to resist getting your bike out, yet? Just last Saturday, you would swear that it was mid-summer! I saw SO many two-wheels out and about .... And I'm SO envious!

Was talking to a friend who said that he USED to get his bike out as early as possible, but he spent too much time cleaning the "winter road sh*t" off of it. Now, he's much more selective ... and waits until May. <LOL!> Clever guy!

If you HAVE gotten your ride out already, PLEASE be careful out there! Quite aside from the horrendous amount of BIG potholes, people in cages have to get used to us sharing the road with them again. Seems it is a yearly process -- "Oh, right ... there are motorcycles on the road." Be extra vigilant and careful these next few weeks, friends .... don't like seeing ANYone ending up as "road kill."

Hope to see ya'll at the Spring Motorcycle Show at the Civic Centre next weekend.

And oh, yes! Anyone got a nice little Honda Rebel 250 cruiser that you'd like to give me ... or sell me REALLY, REALLY cheap! <LOL!>

PEI SPRING MOTORCYCLE SHOW A GO!

Got a note from my buddy, MIke Hill, with information about the second annual Charlottetown motorcycle show. Mike tells us:

"Just dropping you an email to inform you that our annual bike show is booked for April 17th - 19th at the Charlottetown Civic Center. Set-up will be on the 17th, and the show will be open to the public the 18th & 19th.

This year we've added a "Used Bike Corral" with the cost being $20 to display your used bikes for sale. All organizations are invited to attend, however,due to cost increases, there will be a $100 registration fee, with the profits going to charity. Registrationa MUST be in by April 1st. .

We will be adding more to the show as things progress. More info when confirmed.

ATLANTIC MOTORCYCLE AND ATV SHOW ROARS INTO MONCTON FOR THE SECOND TIME Feb 13 - 15/09

Hold on to your helmets, folks --- here we go again! The 2nd annual Atlantic Motorcycle and ATV show is coming in just a couple of weeks.

Their webpage says, "Over 15,000 Motorcycle & ATV enthusiasts poured through the Moncton Coliseum Complex during the first Atlantic Motorcycle & ATV Show last February. No one was prepared for the buzz this event caused throughout the industry, the Atlantic Provinces and in the media, and anticipation is extremely high for the 2009 show. All the major manufacturers will be there!!!

The show runs Friday, Feb. 13, 12 noon - 9:00 pm; Saturday, Feb. 14, 10:00 am - 9:00 pm; and Sunday, Feb. 15, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm at the Moncton Coliseum.

Admission prices are $10 Adults, $8 Senior / Student, Children under 10 FREE when accompanied by an adult. (Go to the website to print a coupon good for $1 off admission.)
